Blown out of Proportion
Thursday, October 30, 2008 6:05So, we have this ad campaign sort of deal getting off the ground at Eve University. It seems a couple of conflicting designs and their respective designers are butting heads and it isn’t pretty. Yes, I’m one of the designers.
I can’t readily post the images here, however, the situation came down to me accusing someone else of taking my text and using it in their design. The other parties argument is valid although weak. The other designer has stated that he assumed the verbiage in the design (mine) was what was decided upon, and he’s right. The text took some time and considerable effort by many to agree upon with suggestions from the Corp as a whole. The design and flow of the text is my claim. In fact, I spent a couple of weeks trying to get it all to work in tandem.
Also, my claim is that the designer didn’t research (aka – READ one word) the 16 or more pages of forum discussions on the development of one ad in particular, which any and all were welcome to participate in. Needless to say, all the requirements are there in the development forums for all to freely read and contribute. Sorry, it’s a private sub-forum on our corps thread and it wouldn’t be right of me to post it anyhow.
In his defense, I must state, that he was a late comer and needed to come up with something quick as we have a deadline to meet. So, he saw the work that had been done already and thought “Ok, that’s the stuff I should be using” as a general template. I’ll give him that and I understand. He was wrong, but I understand why. I just wish he took an hour to read the requirements and input so many others had already contributed and came up with something original. There is very little that is original in design flow. Yes, he’s way more technically savvy then me, but I am far more creative. He’s currently in the design biz and I’m no longer on the advertising scene. He should know the difference and appreciate all aspects of each.
I admit, I started the squabble. I really should have initially PM’d the guy about it. Ooops. Regardless, I did send him a PM after he rightfully blasted back at me, yet he claims that since I started it in public, he will keep it in public. I really don’t understand such immaturity but I digress.
I don’t know what to make of the situation. I feel like a tool by outing him him public and can’t very well fix it to any level of satisfaction. I appreciate the fact that he was trying to do something for Eve University and I’ve now given him a bad experience. that was not what I had intended.
Even though I felt wronged, what I did was worse in the spirit of things. I’ve taken away a positive experience from someone and that’s not something I’ll live down easily. I’m taking a public vacation, meaning nothing I do in corp will be public for a while. I’ve got work to do behind the scene’s and in game. No more forum posts or corp chat, not that I talk much to begin with.
All said and done, when the time is right, I’ll share the comparison images, but not for a good few months to let this thing settle. I don’t need any more drama. Sorry to be so cryptic on this, I just need to vent and don’t feel comfortable giving details just now. I’m certainly not going to name names, that would just be over the line.
For now, I’m outs, partially. I will of course be here in my little corner of the world. I’m not disappearing completely, I’m just dropping from the general public eye within the Corporation to regain my self control before I reach out and touch someone.
Awgh, fek…

Sometimes, we f*** up. Recognise it, apologise to anyone hurt, refocus on the right direction, learn lessons and keep going. Don’t beat yourself up too much. Nor anyone else.
